For some people, spring means one thing: You finally get to enjoy your pontoon boat again! But to make sure your boat is capable and undamaged, you need to take precautions in the autumn months to protect your investment. Use the following tips to protect your boat during the off-season–or to winterize it.
Clean and Polish Your Boat
As simple as it sounds to clean your boat before putting it in storage, too many boat owners have skipped this step only to find that it’s cost them big. Clean the outside of your boat, making sure you remove any grime and barnacles that could cause damage when left in storage. Apply a coat of polish to the pontoons and sides of the boat. This will keep it from rusting and will extend the life of your boat.
Be sure to also clean the inside of your boat, ensuring that all surfaces are completely dry before you cover it. Materials used on pontoon boats, like teak, carpet, and vinyl, are great at breeding mildew if left damp over the off-season. Remove any extra equipment, especially items like skis, tubes, and towels, that can hold moisture and promote mold growth. Also, remove any electronic equipment that may get damaged by cold temperatures.
Prepare Your Engine
Each engine is different, so it’s best to check your owner’s manual to ensure you’re following proper procedures for your motor. It’s important with all motors, however, that you leave the gas tank at least 3/4 full. The gas will help prevent damage as your engine shrinks and expands from changing temperatures. Be sure you don’t overfill the tank. A bit of space is good as it leaves room for condensation.
Also, be sure to seal off any exhaust ports and switch off any valves to prevent internal corrosion. Finally, drain the coolant from the engine and add antifreeze to help protect the engine from cold temperatures.
Remove the Battery
Many pontoon boat owners choose to disconnect their batteries during the winter. If so, be sure to keep your battery fully charged and on board in case the bilge pump needs tending.
Cover and Store Your Boat
Boats are best kept in storage facilities like a garage or shed to protect them from the elements. However, many boaters store their pontoon boats outdoors and are still able to use them come spring. Regardless of where you store your boat, you should always cover it with the cover it came with or with a secure tarp that has been fitted for your boat. Be sure you have a quality cover for outdoor storage to avoid moisture build-up. You might consider shrink-wrapping your entire craft for optimum preservation.
If all of this is too much to handle or you’re nervous about doing it wrong, you can hire a professional to winterize and store your pontoon boat for you.
